When I first say this podcast post I was super excited because I believed that it would tie directly into what I am trying to achieve here at The Cognitive Warrior Project. In some ways I was right, they talk about being a ‘life-long learner’ and a key component of the National Defense Strategy is ‘readiness’ that can only be achieved through continuous study so there is a foundation to build upon when the time comes. But, honestly, this was a tough listen on a topic that is supremely important.
The Cognitive Warrior Project is dedicated to the continuing education for war fighters that embrace the adaptation required for tomorrow’s battlefield. The goal of these posts are to expose you to a variety of information, to continue to expand your education and bridge the gap from policy maker to warfighter.
Today’s featured podcast is the War on the Rocks Podcast titled: Scoping the Future of Education in National Security and Beyond. You can follow that link to the podcast or go to the War on the Rocks website for more information. From their website:
There’s a revolution coming in education that promises to empower lifelong learners in the national security space. In the first of a series of special episodes, pick apart the technological, organizational, and — most importantly — cultural issues at play. What does it all boil down to? What kind of learning should count and how can you make sure it counts? To understand all this, Ryan spoke with Sae Schatz, the Director of the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative; retired Marine Corps Brigadier General Frank Kelley, vice president of Defense Acquisitions University; and Jason Tyszko, the vice president of the Center for Education and Workforce at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.
Why is this important to you? And Why should you listen? Because this podcast talks about the direction that education is going, a cultural shift on what counts for learning and how your skills transferable. You have the opportunity to shape your career if you become a life-long learner that utilizes the time beyond specific set blocks in your life. The direction of education is:
- The learner will be in-charge of their learning (choice)
- A new focus on employment experience beyond your resume
- Empowering the learner to build their own future
- Redefining what counts as learning
